I'm currently working on my Common App personal statement and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know I should "show, not tell," but I'm struggling to decide which specific elements are actually crucial for admissions officers.

Is it better to focus on a single transformative event, or a collection of smaller experiences that define my character? Are there certain "clichés" I should absolutely avoid (like the sports injury comeback story)?

As a former admissions officer at a T20 university, I can tell you that the single most important thing is Authenticity. We aren't looking for the "perfect" student; we are looking for a real person who will contribute to our campus community.

Your Unique Voice: The essay should sound like you. If you use a thesaurus for every third word, we can tell.
The "Why": Don't just list what you did. Explain why it matters to you. What did you learn? How did you change?
Specificity: Instead of saying "I am a leader," describe the time you had to mediate a conflict in your debate club.

Avoid the "Global Tour" essay (listing every place you've traveled) and the "Trophy Case" essay (repeating your resume). Focus on a small slice of your life that reveals a large part of your character.
